Mental Health in Communities - Parent Talk
May 2026
In this parent talk, we explored mental health and wellbeing in children, young people, and families, addressing common myths, stigma, and concerns that often prevent people from seeking support. The session highlighted the importance of early intervention, open conversations, and understanding the signs that a child or young person may be struggling with their mental health.
A key reflection from the discussion was that mental health challenges can affect anyone, and cultural beliefs, stigma, and lack of awareness can sometimes create barriers to accessing help, particularly within Black and diverse communities. We explored practical ways parents can support their children’s emotional wellbeing, where to access support, and the importance of creating safe spaces where families feel comfortable seeking help and asking questions.
The session also provided information on local mental health resources, wellbeing services, and crisis support available to families, reinforcing that no parent should have to navigate mental health challenges alone.
