Afrikindness, a community-based charity supporting children and young people from minoritised communities, is proud to announce that it has received funding from the Asda Foundation to deliver a series of targeted wellbeing and leadership workshops for teenagers.

Afrikindness Secures Asda Foundation Funding to Support Young People’s Mental Health and Leadership Development in Leeds

The funding will support 40 young people aged 11–18 through Afrikindness’s Teens Leadership Academy, with a focus on building social and emotional intelligence and mental wellbeing. The programme responds directly to growing concerns around young people’s mental health, low self-confidence, and the lack of safe, culturally responsive spaces where they feel heard and supported.

The funded workshops will take place on 9th, 16th and 23rd May, delivering in-person sessions focused on mindfulness, emotional regulation and peer connection. These sessions build on a successful neuroscience workshop delivered in December 2025 and will be led by specialist facilitators, including a CAMHS-linked mental health coach and a mindfulness practitioner.

Bunmi Owolabi, CEO of Afrikindness, said:

“This funding comes at a critical time. Many of the young people we support are navigating complex challenges—ranging from identity and self-esteem to mental health and social pressures. This grant allows us to provide safe, supportive spaces where they can build confidence, develop essential life skills and feel a strong sense of belonging.”

The funding will also enable Afrikindness to hire accessible venues, provide creative and reflective resources such as journaling materials, and create engaging peer-support environments that bring young people together in positive ways.

Importantly, the programme will reach families who are often excluded from digital services, ensuring that young people can access support in person, regardless of barriers at home.

This investment will not only benefit the participating young people but will also contribute to stronger, more connected communities—empowering the next generation with the resilience, confidence and leadership skills needed to thrive.
