Leeds, Jan 2026

Afrikindness is proud to announce that it has secured funding from Blooming Genius to deliver a dedicated Neurodiversity Family Support Programme in Leeds, aimed at supporting neurodiverse children aged 5–17 with complex needs and their families.

This funding marks a significant step forward in addressing the growing gap in support for families—particularly those from minority ethnic communities—who often face cultural, systemic, and informational barriers when trying to access timely help for their children.

Building on the success of the Afrikindness Community Empowerment Programme, which reached over 600 families across Leeds and Bradford in 2024, Afrikindness has become a trusted first point of contact for families navigating neurodiversity. The organisation’s impact has also been recognised nationally, including an award from Genius Within CIC for its work in promoting inclusion and breaking down cultural barriers.

Transforming Support for Families in Leeds

The newly funded programme will deliver structured, early intervention support to families, ensuring they no longer have to rely on emergency fundraising to access help. Instead, they will benefit from consistent, culturally responsive guidance and practical support.

Key areas of delivery include:

  • Early intervention and family support for children with complex neurodiverse needs
  • Guidance on EHCP processes, including applications, rights, and pathways to assessment
  • Culturally sensitive support, addressing stigma and misconceptions around neurodiversity
  • Referrals and signposting to specialist services such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and mental health support
  • Workshops and awareness sessions for parents, carers, schools, and community leaders
  • Collaboration with schools and community organisations to strengthen support systems

Driving Lasting Impact

This programme will:

  • Bridge the gap between families and statutory services through trusted, culturally informed support
  • Empower parents with the knowledge and confidence to advocate for their children
  • Improve access to education and healthcare services for neurodiverse children
  • Reduce crisis situations by providing early, preventative intervention

The funding responds to real and urgent needs. In previous cases, Afrikindness has had to raise emergency funds to secure intervention for families in crisis—highlighting the importance of sustainable, long-term solutions.

A Step Towards Equity and Inclusion

With this investment, Afrikindness will focus its efforts in Leeds, ensuring that children from underserved communities are seen, heard, and supported. The programme will also strengthen partnerships with schools, local authorities, and community organisations to create a more inclusive and responsive system.

Bunmi Owolabi, CEO of Afrikindness, said:
“This funding is a turning point for the families we support. For too long, many parents—especially from minority ethnic backgrounds—have struggled in silence, navigating complex systems without guidance. This programme ensures that families have access to the right support at the right time, in a way that understands their cultural context. It is about equity, dignity, and giving every child the opportunity to thrive.”

Afrikindness remains committed to championing neurodiversity, breaking down barriers, and working towards a future where no family is left behind.
