Afrikindness successfully delivered a high-impact safeguarding training session in collaboration with the Newcastle Nigerian Muslim Community and the Muslim Association of Nigeria Sunderland, reaching over 80 parents, carers, and community members.

The session, facilitated by Afrikindness team members Adwina Smith and Lanre Oyedokun, focused on equipping families with essential knowledge and practical tools to understand safeguarding and child protection within the UK context.

Participants engaged in discussions covering:

  • The fundamentals of safeguarding and child protection
  • Parents’ rights and responsibilities
  • Recognising risks and responding early
  • Practical, real-life scenarios to build confidence

The training emphasised the importance of moving away from fear-based engagement toward informed, proactive parenting. It also highlighted the critical role of culturally relevant, community-based approaches in strengthening safeguarding outcomes.

Speaking after the session, Afrikindness noted the importance of bridging the gap between statutory safeguarding systems and communities:

“Too often, families only encounter safeguarding when issues have escalated. Our goal is to ensure parents are informed, confident, and supported early—because safeguarding works best when communities are part of the solution.”

The session forms part of Afrikindness’ wider commitment to empowering under-represented communities through education, advocacy, and culturally informed safeguarding practice, expanding our reach to Newcastle.
