Afrikindness Teens Academy inspires the next generation of civic leaders through an unforgettable educational journey to Westminster
Fifteen young people from communities across Leeds (LS7, LS8, LS9 and LS14) travelled to London this summer for an inspiring educational visit to the UK Parliament, as part of the Afrikindness Teens Academy Leadership Programme.
Accompanied by three adult volunteers, the visit was designed to bring democracy to life by giving young people first-hand experience of how decisions are made in the United Kingdom and how they, as young citizens, can influence change within their communities.
The visit builds on Afrikindness’ commitment to developing confident, informed and socially responsible young leaders. It also formed the next stage of the learning journey following UK Parliament Week, during which the young people participated in civic education activities at Leeds Civic Hall and met with the Lord Mayor of Leeds. The visit to Westminster allowed them to deepen that learning by experiencing Parliament in action.
Bringing Democracy to Life
The educational tour challenged the young people to think differently about their role in society and demonstrated that everyone has a voice.
They explored practical ways citizens can influence decisions, including:
- Writing to their Member of Parliament (MP)
- Contacting local councillors
- Raising issues with their GP
- Starting and signing petitions
- Peaceful protest and campaigning
- Participating in consultations and community engagement
One of the highlights of the visit was when the young people worked together to develop and present their own petitions. They confidently stood before their peers to present the changes they would like to see in society, demonstrating impressive communication skills, confidence and critical thinking.
Their ideas ranged from improving mental health support for young people and tackling bullying to creating more opportunities for youth voices to be heard within their communities.
Watching the young people passionately articulate the issues they care about was a powerful reminder that today’s young people are not simply future leaders—they are leaders today.
Learning Inside the Palace of Westminster
Throughout the visit, the group explored the rich history and workings of Parliament while learning about the foundations of British democracy.
The young people gained insight into:
- The history and purpose of Parliament
- The relationship between the House of Commons, House of Lords and the Monarch
- How laws are made through the passage of Bills
- The role of Green and White Papers in shaping legislation
- Parliamentary debates and voting
- The role of Members of Parliament and Peers
- The responsibilities of the Speaker of the House
- The layout and traditions of both Parliamentary chambers
- British values and how democracy has evolved over time
They also learned about the historic struggle for women’s voting rights and the Suffragette movement, seeing the tributes within Parliament that recognise the courage and determination of those who fought for equal democratic participation.
The visit inspired many thoughtful questions from the group, and Parliament’s education team warmly engaged with every question, encouraging curiosity and discussion throughout the tour.
Exploring London’s Historic Landmarks
Following the Parliament visit, the educational experience continued with a guided walk through some of London’s most iconic landmarks.
The group visited:
- Big Ben
- Westminster Abbey
- Parliament Square
- The Cenotaph
- 10 Downing Street
- St James’s Park
- Buckingham Palace
These locations helped bring Britain’s political, royal and national history to life while giving the young people a deeper appreciation of the country’s heritage and institutions.
The day concluded at around 4:00pm, when the group began their journey back to Leeds, reflecting on a day filled with learning, inspiration and unforgettable memories.

The UK Parliament visit forms part of the wider Afrikindness Teens Academy Leadership Programme, which equips young people with leadership skills, confidence, civic understanding, social and emotional learning, public speaking experience and opportunities to become active citizens within their communities.

The next Afrikindness Teens Academy cohort will begin in October 2026 as part of our Youth Employability Workshop, where young people will develop leadership, employability and life skills while exploring future education and career opportunities.
