Leeds, 11th June, 2025
One year after its launch, the Afrikindness Neurodiversity Community Programme (ANCP) has become a transformative force for culturally diverse families navigating neurodivergence in Leeds and beyond. Born out of a pressing need to address deep-rooted stigma, isolation, and the lack of culturally sensitive support, the programme has empowered parents, engaged schools, trained community leaders, and ignited critical conversations.
In just 12 months:
- Over 400 individuals have participated in interactive sessions.
- 141 community leaders and professionals have received specialist neurodiversity and inclusion training.
- A 6-part webinar series reached hundreds, offering emotional support and expert insight.
- A weekly parent drop-in session, launched in March 2025 with support from the Sylvie Nunn Memorial Award, has been consistently oversubscribed.
- The programme has extended its reach into schools, communities, and local government spaces, including Afrikindness’ active involvement on the Leeds Learning Disability and Neurodivergence Population Health Board.
Crucially, a recent evaluation by Voluntary Action Leeds confirmed the programme’s impact: families now feel more informed, less isolated, and better equipped to support their children

Afrikindness also trained a first cohort of community leaders—three of whom were recognised by the 130th Lord Mayor of Leeds—to champion inclusive education and outreach. These leaders are now co-creating culturally tailored neurodiversity training packs for schools and developing advocacy toolkits for communities.
Looking Ahead
Afrikindness is preparing for a Neurodiversity Mini-Conference and Parent Support Session in August 2025, and is calling on schools, service providers, funders, and partners to support this next phase. From co-creating training with educators to conducting outreach in underserved communities, the movement is growing—and you can be part of it.
