The inaugural Colours of Africa Art Competition, held as part of Africa Awareness Week in England, celebrated creativity, cultural exploration, and diversity.
Bempton Primary School emerged as the winner of the Primary School Category Colours of Africa Art Excellence Award, impressing the judges with two outstanding entries by young artists Julian Ogrodnik and Millie Branton, who were recognized as Cultural Ambassadors for their remarkable contributions.
The students’ artwork uniquely captured the essence of African culture through vibrant use of color, intricate patterns, and compelling storytelling. Julian’s piece earned a high score for its intricate details, vibrant and masterful use of colours, and beautifully capturing the spirit and pride of African culture, while Millie’s artwork beautifully highlighted a natural phenomenon of a sunset in the context of Africa with an incredible use of colours.
The awards ceremony, held on the 8th of November, was a lively and joyful event attended by the Head Teacher, staff, and students of Bempton Primary School.
The Head Teacher, Mary Doody-Greaves, renowned for her dedication to nurturing creativity and inclusion, welcomed Afrikindness representatives and praised the students for their hard work and imaginative spirit.
“This competition has not only inspired our students to think globally but has also reinforced the importance of celebrating diversity and creativity,” said the Head Teacher.
Awards and Recognition
Bempton Primary School and its students received:
- Primary School Colours of Africa Art Excellence Trophy for the school.
- Cultural Ambassador recognition for the winning students.
- Certificates of Achievement for all participating students.
- Cash Prizes for the winning students.
- African Art Boxes, containing authentic art/music resources from Africa and books, to encourage ongoing cultural exploration.
The awards were presented by Alice Crawford, Afrikindness’ Education and Curriculum Specialist, who commended the school for fostering creativity and cultural awareness.
In her address, Maleeha Arther, Afrikindness’ Education Project Lead, said,
“Julian and Millie, your work radiates the beauty, depth, and vibrancy of Africa. Through your creativity, you have shown how art can bridge cultures and inspire a kinder, more inclusive world.”
Celebrating Diversity and Global Citizenship
This competition highlights the significance of integrating cultural education into schools, helping students become global citizens who value empathy, kindness, and diversity.
By promoting initiatives like Africa Awareness Week, Afrikindness aims to inspire future generations to embrace inclusivity and celebrate the richness of different cultures.
