In a heartfelt celebration of community spirit, the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall-Katung, hosted a Civic Reception at Leeds Civic Hall to honour the invaluable work of small charities and community groups during Small Charity Week 2024. The event, organised by Leeds City Council in partnership with Voluntary Action Leeds, brought together an inspiring range of non-profit organisations to recognize their contributions to the city.

The reception provided an opportunity for small charities and groups, defined as non-profit community or self-help groups run by volunteers or volunteer organizations with an annual turnover of less than £25,000, to receive well-deserved appreciation for their dedication and impact on the lives of Leeds residents.

The Lord Mayor expressed her gratitude to the attendees, saying, “Small charities are the heartbeat of Leeds,” highlighting their critical role in building a compassionate and resilient community.

During the event, representatives from small groups and charities received certificates of recognition and had the chance to have their photos taken with the Lord Mayor, marking the occasion as a memorable moment of appreciation and solidarity. One of the many organisations celebrated was Afrikindness, which received a certificate of achievement for its significant contributions to the community.

The ceremony featured inspiring speeches by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Abigail Marshall-Katung, Chief Officer of Voluntary Action Leeds, Hannah Bailey, and Councillor Jane Dowson, who each emphasised the importance of small charities in creating positive change. The event also served as a unique networking opportunity for the attendees, fostering new connections and partnerships among like-minded groups.

Afrikindness, a recognized charity at the event, expressed their excitement and gratitude, stating: “We are honoured to receive a certificate from the Lord Mayor of Leeds, recognizing Afrikindness for our contributions. It was fantastic to meet our funders, such as the Leeds Community Foundation, and to network with other amazing charities making a difference in our community.”

The event underscored the collaborative spirit that defines Leeds, with small charities and groups playing a vital role in supporting diverse communities and addressing local needs.
